Federal court rules in favour of traditional owners

On Wednesday the federal court of Australia ruled that the greenhouse gas emissions from the Santos Narrabri Pilliga gas project were not adequately assessed in light of the Gomeroi native title claim.

The court found that the negative impact of the project on climate change would fundamentally disrupt the rights of the Gomeroi people under their native title claim.

Greens MLC and spokesperson for the environment and climate change Sue Higginson, said this is a groundbreaking win for the Gomeroi traditional owners, the future of claims such as this in Australia and all communities facing the impacts of climate change.

Ms Higginson said this is the Gomeroi saying climate change has to be a focus now and the impacts of climate change when we’re looking at these big fossil fuel development projects.

The traditional owners of land slated for the major coal-seam gas project have won the right to appeal its approval.
