In times of crisis, a few kind words or thoughtful actions can mean the world to those tackling the situation at hand.

Volunteers at the Bendeemeer Rural Fire Service station were delighted by a surprise waiting for them after a gruelling day.

Matilda Bollock took the effort to write a note of thanks.

"To the Bendemeer firefighters, thank you for fighting all the fires, you guys are lifesavers," she said.

"If I was older [sic] enough I would help you guys fight fires.

"Thank you so much, I wish I could help but I am only 11 years old."

Matilda told 2TM News she was inspired to write a letter after seeing her dad race off to help another family after their house caught alight.

She added that there are not enough firefighters, so the ones who are doing the job have a huge workload.

"They can't spend time with their family while their fighting fires and they miss them," Matilda said.

"I just wanted to say thank you."

Matilda said she definitely wanted to be a firefighter when she grows up.

The Bendermeer RFS crew shared their appreciation in a social media post.

"Last night our crews arrived back to the station after a long and ultimately unsuccessful day," it read.

"We'd spent all day putting in containment lines only to be beaten late in the afternoon.

"Some days you win and some days you gotta get a new plan, go back and win another day."

After their day, they were greeted with home-cooked choc chip cookies, Christmas cake, peaches and bottled water.

"Pinned to the top was a note," the post continued.

"Thanks a million, Matilda. You made our day. Your package has been packed into our fridges to be eaten (inhaled) on the fireground today.

"Can't wait for you to join us on the trucks in a few years. You're a little rippa."
