Push to keep rural health centre in public hands

Following the announcement of the merger of Mackellar Car, the Member for Tamworth is pushing for the Gunnedah Rural Health centre to stay in public hands. McLean Care announced the transfer of Mackellar Care Services to local aged care provider McLean Care on Thursday. Wayne Snelson, CEO MacKellar Care, said they have been tackling ongoing challenges including sector reforms, increasing costs of operating as a stand-alone provider, the cost of complying with the new quality standards and now the results of COVID 19. He added the Mackellar Board unanimously agreed on the new unified organisation and said it would ensure the future security of the residents, their families and staff. Mr Anderson said this is a purpose-built health centre and he is pushing for the facility to remain in public hands and once again start delivering health services to the people of Gunnedah. “I am a strong believer of providing the best health services close to home and it would be a shame if this building was lost to the community and not part of providing those much needed local health services," he said. “It makes sense to me to keep this purpose build facility delivering health services to the people of Gunnedah. “I have had many discussions with the community, groups like PRaMS, (PaediatRic And Maternity Support) the Hospital Auxiliary, the Local Health Committee, the local Red Cross branch, Gunnedah Shire Council, our local Federal Member Mark Coulton and Hunter New England Health." Mr Anderson said there are a number of options including being part of the $53m redevelopment of the Gunnedah hospital. He added it would be a good opportunity to ramp up recruitment. "We need more doctors and specialists in Gunnedah and this facility would be very attractive to someone thinking of moving to our region," he said. "Strong health care in Gunnedah is a huge priority for me and I'll do whatever I can to help support the health services in Gunnedah. "There are plenty of opportunities and I don’t want to see them slip away. Now is the time to act.”
