Connect, participate, and celebrate this Youth Week

New South Wales Youth Week 2023 commences this Thursday, April 20 with a variety of activities for ages 12 through to 24 to enjoy with the theme of ‘Connect, Participate, and Celebrate’.

Youth Week is celebrated in communities across New South Wales including Tamworth, Armidale, and Gunnedah, organised for young people by young people with the aim to celebrate Australia’s youth and their contributions to the community.

During this week, young Australians are encouraged to share ideas, attend activities, and voice any issues of concern.

Connect, participate, and celebrate this NSW Youth Week with one of the many events happening across the greater Tamworth region.

“Tamworth Regional Youth Council have done a fantastic job in selecting events throughout the week that will reflect the current needs of youth in the area,” said Haley Fenn, Coordinator of Out of School Hours Care and Tamworth Regional Youth Council.

Activities organised throughout the week include:

Tamworth

- Thursday 20/04/23 - Rainbow Run, kicking off in Viaduct Park at 2pm.

- Friday 21/04/23 - Silent Disco, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the PCYC

- Friday 28/04/23 - Discobility, an all-inclusive disco at PYCY from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Gunnedah

- Youth Week Short Film Competition, categories 12 – 16 and 17 – 24, due Thursday 27/04/23.

Another highly anticipated event of the week is the 2023 Youth Expo held at Gunnedah Town Hall on Thursday, April 27 from 9am to 3pm, as an opportunity for young soon-to-be school leavers and those who have left school to find career and support options for their future.

“In the current employment market, school leavers have a wide range of options, and there are businesses right here in Gunnedah who can offer amazing opportunities,” Gunnedah Shire Council Manager Economy and Growth, Susan Frater said.

“Alternatively, there will be universities and tertiary institutions there to talk to students about what they have to offer.”

The Gunnedah Youth Week Expo is funded by a grant from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, matched by Gunnedah Shire Council and supported by employers and services across the Shire.

“This free event has been designed especially for young people aged 12 to 24 to bring a window of the world for Gunnedah today,” Ms Frater said.

Youth in the Armidale region will be invited to share their views with the Council through a survey and in person at a morning tea with the mayor and councillors.

Anyone from 12 to 24 years is welcome to complete the survey and have their voices heard.

“This year’s theme for NSW Youth Week is ‘Connect, Participate, and Celebrate,’ as it really is an opportunity to reengage with the community after the pandemic,” Community Services Manager, Kylie Giles said.

“There’s something for everyone and we want all young people to feel welcome as it’s all about them and what they need to enjoy being a part of this wonderful community.”
